How the area grew

Foleshill was heath and common before it was a suburb. Enclosure, the Coventry Canal, and the turnpiking of Foleshill Road and Stoney Stanton Road opened the way for coal, ribbon weaving and, later, large factories. Tight terraces filled the grid in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries: small plots, little set-back, low brick walls, and houses built up to the corners.

The canal conservation area and converted industrial buildings (including well-known former works on Foleshill Road) are part of that story. They explain why the streets feel mixed — houses, shops, depots — not why a sofa is hard to turn on a landing.

The jobs

Compact house clearances in terraces that hold more than they look as if they should. Flat clearances above commercial premises. Landlord instructions after a tenancy, once leftover goods have been properly released. Occasional commercial rooms in the mixed streets.

Whole-house probate work happens here too, but the property is more often a smaller house than a Finham detached. Papers and photographs still need setting aside; there is simply less loft to hide them in — and more chance they are in a front bedroom wardrobe.

Access and discretion

On-street parking and busier roads are the constraint. A vehicle cannot always stand at the door. Shared yards and entries help when they exist. We plan for a carry.

These streets are lived in and watched. Discretion is ordinary courtesy, especially on sorting jobs and bereavement work. We do not need to advertise the nature of the contents to the road.
